Basil ‘Dark Opal’ is hands down the darkest basil we have ever grown, with inky, almost-black leaves that add instant depth and contrast to summer arrangements. It is the kind of foliage that quietly does a lot of heavy lifting, grounding bright colours and making even the simplest bouquet feel designed.
With a warm, clove-like scent and mild, earthy aroma, this heat-loving basil is as beautiful as it is useful. It thrives in full sun and warm soil, rewarding you with rich color and steady growth all season long. We reach for it again and again when bouquets need contrast, texture, and a little drama without overpowering the flowers.
This variety solves a common cutting garden problem by offering foliage that is just as visually impactful as the blooms themselves. Less filler hunting, more cohesive arrangements, and a garden that feels layered and thoughtful.

Seed Sowing & Growing Notes:
Start seeds indoors in trays about 6 weeks before last frost. Transplant outdoors only after all danger of frost has passed and temperatures have warmed, as basil is very sensitive to cold. Plants thrive once established in warm soil and consistent sun.
Harvesting & Vase Life:
Harvest when stems begin to toughen or as flowers begin to form. Cut during the coolest part of the day to reduce wilting. Immediately dip the bottom few inches of stems in boiling water for 7 to 10 seconds, or use Quick Dip, then place into cool water. Expect a vase life of approximately 7 to 10 days.
