Amaranth ‘Red Spike’ is a powerhouse in both the garden and the vase. Towering and deeply saturated, it produces rich burgundy seed heads that bring instant depth and contrast to summer and early fall arrangements. It is widely considered the best dark amaranth available, and once you grow it, it’s easy to see why.
The color story alone is reason enough to plant it. Velvety wine-toned spikes rise above foliage that shifts from dusty plum on top to an even deeper shade beneath. Seed Sowing & Growing Notes:
Start seeds indoors 4 to 6 weeks before last frost, then transplant outdoors once all danger of frost has passed. Amaranth can also be direct-seeded after frost for a simple, low-maintenance option. Warm soil and sunshine encourage strong, fast growth.
Harvesting & Vase Life:
Harvest when seed heads are about three-quarters open for the best color and structure. Remove most foliage to highlight the bold spikes. Expect a vase life of 7 to 10 days.
